Nach der Installation der neuesten Sicherheits-Updates von Microsoft bekommen Nutzer der Firewall-Software ZoneAlarm plötzlich keine Verbindung ins Internet mehr.

In den Support-Foren von Checkpoint, Hersteller der Personal Firewall ZoneAlarm, häufen sich die Anfragen und Beschwerden von Anwendern, die brav die neusten Windows-Updates eingespielt haben. Microsoft hat am gestrigen Patch Day unter anderen ein Sicherheits-Update gegen eine Spoofing-Lücke im DNS-Client von Windows XP und 2000 bereit gestellt (Security Bulletin MS08-037). Dieses kollidiert jedoch offenbar mit einer Schutzfunktion in Zonealarm. It turns out the feds have been monitoring Interstate 5 for nuclear "dirty bombs." They do it with radiation detectors so sensitive it led to the following incident.

"Vehicle goes by at 70 miles per hour," Giuliano told the crowd. "Agent is in the median, a good 80 feet away from the traffic. Signal went off and identified an isotope [in the passing car]."

The agent raced after the car, pulling it over not far from the monitoring spot (near the Bow-Edison exit, 18 miles south of Bellingham). The agent questioned the driver, then did a cursory search of the car, Giuliano said.

The Phantom time hypothesis is a theory developed by Heribert Illig (born 1947) in 1991, which suggests that the Early Middle Ages (more precisely, the period 614911 AD) never occurred, meaning that all artifacts attributed to this period are from other times and that all historical figures from this period are outright fabrications. The vast majority of historians believe this theory to be wrong.

The basis of Illig's claims is the paucity of archaeological evidence that can be reliably dated to this period; perceived inadequacies of radiometric and dendrochronological methods of dating this period, and the over-reliance of medieval historians on written sources. For Western Europe, Illig claims the presence of Romanesque architecture in the tenth century as evidence that less than half a millennium could have passed since the fall of the Roman Empire, and concludes that the entire Carolingian period, including the person of Charles the Great, is a forgery of medieval chroniclers, more precisely a conspiracy instigated by Otto III and Gerbert d'Aurillac.

The theory also stems from the belief that during the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in Europe (1582 AD), while compensating for a ten day discrepancy in the old Julian calendar, many dates were falsely (or ineptly) recalculated as the new system created a thirteen day discrepancy.
